Myths and Lies About Counting Calories
October 15th, 2009 | Posted in Food Info, From The Cook, kitchen talk, losing weight | Comments OffBecause of the fact that at 330 pounds I am seriously overweight, I’ve spent a lot of time recently reading all kinds of stuff about losing weight and different diet plans and in the course of this I’ve run into quite a number of myths and outright lies that, if you follow them, will not only make losing weight very difficult, they will more likely lead you to gaining weight instead of losing it!
If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner.
This may be technically true but it’s not going to help you lose weight or physically feel better.
Cappuchinos, Latte’s and mochas are good for you because the caffeine in the coffee speeds up your metabolism and the milk is a good source of calcium.
While it may be technically true that caffeine does speed up your metabolism some and it is true that milk is a good source of calcium, there’s a lot more to those drinks than most people realize.
Cappuccino is basically espresso with a little milk and a lot of milk foam and is often made with cinnamon or cocoa powder sprinkled on top. That means that an average 16 oz cappuccino is going to have around 15 grams of carbs and 100 to 180 calories.
A Latte is basically espresso with a lot of milk in it. A 16 oz latte will have around 21 grams of carbs and 160 to 260 calories depending on where you get it.
Mocha is a latte made with chocolate and usually has whipped cream on top. An average 16 oz mocha will come in with something like 33 to 42 grams of carb and a whopping 210 to 433 calories.
Weight Loss Rules To Avoid
The following is just a sampling of the “weight loss rules” that I’ve run into. Each and every one of them is a bald faced lie.
- Broken Cookies don’t have calories because they leak out when the cookies break.
- If you eat something and no one sees you eat it then it has no calories.
- When you eat with somebody else and you eat less than they do then those calories don’t count.
- If you drink a diet soda while eating a candy bar, the diet soda cancels out the calories in the candy bar
- Any food used for “medicinal purposes“, such as Sara Lee Cheesecake and Hot Chocolate never has calories.
- Movie related foods like buttered popcorn, Junior Mints, Milk Duds, Tootsie Rolls, and so on do not have calories because they’re part of the entertainment package and not part of your body’s fuel.
- Things licked off knives and spoons while preparing food don’t have calories.
- Foods that are the same color have the same number of calories. Some examples often given for this include: spinach and pistachio ice cream; mushrooms and white chocolate.
- Anything eaten while standing over the kitchen sink has no calories.
- If you standing up then the calories in that food don’t count because any calories ingested go directly to your feet and are excreted by natural moisture release
- The acid in coke counteracts the fat in fried foods and fast foods and prevents it from entering your system.
- If a candy bar has peanuts in it then it’s a healthy snack because the peanuts provide a lot of extra protein.
- Calories in desserts don’t count if you eat the dessert first and then eat the main meal.
Simply put, if you eat it, then the calories in that food all count toward your daily total of calories eaten. The ONLY time calories in a food do not count is when you don’t eat it.
