Red Wine, Does A Glass A day Keep the Doctor Away?

June 30th, 2012 | Posted in Food Info, Health | Comments Off

Over the years I’ve heard it said many times that red wine, in moderation, has a number of health benefits. Among them are a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer and even obesity.

I recently saw mention of this again and decided that I would spend some Google time checking it out for myself. What I found was actually rather interesting.

First off I have to point out that there is Biblical precedence here. The apostle Paul advised Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach.

In my search I found that red wine has a number of chemicals in it, one that seems to be getting a lot of attention from medical researcher types is Resveratrol. It’s an anti-oxidant that prevents cell damage. One article about the health effects of red wine shows that there is some evidence that a glass or two of red wine, taken with a meal, can have a number of actual health benefits.

These can include things such as a lower risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke, type II diabeties, colon cancer and more. Granted that from what I’ve read the medical community isn’t exactly all on the same page on this but it does seem that the evidence is mounting in favor of the idea that a glass or two of red wine with a meal can be good for you.

One study even showed that moderate wine drinkers experienced less problems with macular degeneration than non-drinkers. Again it’s apparently due to the anti-oxidant and anticoagulant properties of red wine.

I have to admit that I find all this to be quite interesting. Although I am also not about to run out and buy a bottle or three of wine either. The research is interesting and there is definitely something there. It’s just that I have never cared for alcoholic beverages in any form. The very few that I’ve had occasion to try have not been even remotely anything that I liked the taste of at all.

Then again, it’s possible that I’ve just not had occasion (or the bucks!) to try the “good stuff”.

In any event, in the course of my searching I found one of those “infographic” things that you might find interesting.

Meanwhile, I’ll lift my coffee mug and toast to your good health.
