Ever wonder why it is that after that big Thanksgiving day feast everybody’s ready to kick back on the couch and fall asleep watching the game? Well, it turns out that there really is a reason for it. Several in fact.

First is the fact that turkey meat contains a lot of an amino acid called L-tryptophan. This amino acid is one of the things that brain chemistry converts into serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that, among other things, contributes to our feeling satisfied, comfortable and sleepy.

Next is the carbohydrates. Found in starchy and sugar-containing foods, carbohydrates form part of the body’s natural “fuel” and Finally, that big meal means that there’s going to be an increased flow of blood to the stomach for the digestion process which can mean a reduced flow to the brain.

All of this together adds up to produce that “warm, full and sleepy” feeling that’s so common after a big meal.
